The famous University of Oxford sponsors the Museum of Art and Archeology in the new Ashmolean building. This is a famous place to view some of the greatest artifacts ever placed together for display. Between the lower ground level of thematic galleries and a top floor suite of galleries are three levels. These levels are generally devoted to the ancient world, the medieval world, and the early modern world. China has artifacts on display on all three of these levels. What the ancient artifacts seem to suggest to us is not very easy to notice when one begins to observe the displays. After all, these are important pieces from the ancient to pre-modern worlds which even Asian people living today have little personal connection to. However, when a closer observation and careful research are conducted the implication of the collection is quite provoking for thought.

On the ground floor gallery China’s artifacts are displayed up to 800 CE. These include a magnificent collection of bronzes, jades, and early ceramic pieces. Sir Herbert and Lady Ingram presented this excellent collection to the museum in 1956. Their collection contains several thousand Chinese and Japanese works of art. The gallery itself is long and narrow. On one side is the line of cases displaying ordinary bronzes of the Shang period (circa 1600-1100 BCE). Western Zhou (circa 1100-771 BCE), Eastern Zhou (770-250 BCE), and Han (206 BCE-220 CE) dynasty artifacts are part of the collection as well. On the other side is a display that documents the development of formal writing in the Middle Kingdom. It starts with what are called “oracle bones.” Then it ends with well-defined Chinese calligraphy. Next to the oracle bones and bronze jar, with a single character written opposite its handle, is a small scroll which reproduces in red ink a scapula shaped bone and its inscription. These pieces tell a fantastic story of the development of art and writing in the ancient world of the East that is informative and revealing. It also demonstrates that civilization developed to a high level in China.

The calligraphy at the bottom is signed by a person named “Dong Zuobin” (1895-1963). It turns out that Dong was one of the primary excavators of Anyang. He records his own inscription to confirm that the scroll was a gift to Dr. Homer Dubs on his departure from China in 1947. He left China in order to take up the chair in Chinese at the University of Oxford. The writing display continues with Zhou bronze inscriptions. It is present with Zhou and Han dynasty coins, clay sealing, roof tiles, and mirrors which bear different categories of functional text.

The early China gallery certainly demonstrates the drawing connections between the pieces on display and the scholarship they have inspired. However, it also shows how writing and artifacts from ancient China have reverberated in dynasties which followed earlier ones. As an example, one can look at the bronze gui on a square pedestal base. This is a rare and excellent piece of mid to late Western Zhou bronze casting. It is additionally distinguished by its often published inscription, but also by its ownership history. The early China gallery proceeds with a noteworthy display of Tang (618-907 CE) sancai wares linking back to the Central Asian and Indian collections. This is also a theme developed on the next floor up in a gallery entitled “Asian Crossroads.” This theme explores the connections, mainly through trade, between East and Southeast Asia. It then reaches across the Indian Ocean to Africa, and even to the Mediterranean. If this theme has historical validity (which according to the evidence it appears to), then perhaps the ancient Eastern world was not as isolated as the modern observer today might think?

Furniture and tapestries, including Japanese and Chinese lacquer chairs, and a beautiful Coromandel screen are complemented by smaller displays of ceramics. The ceramics come from Japan, China, Southeast Asia, England, France, and Germany. However, the most direct example of trade between England and China in the gallery is a mid 18th century porcelain plate with a simple border of pink flowers around an image of the gate to the Oxford Botanical Gardens. This is another evidence of the theme of “West Meets East” as a historical event. It deserves to be rightly considered with an open mind. The bold suggestion from the later ceramic pieces seems hard to avoid. Namely, trade between the West and East has been going on for a long time. How long exactly is uncertain. It may be impossible to ever know with any precise accuracy. However, it may also be longer than we had previously thought!

As filmmakers and film writers we want to make our screenplays, movies, and productions as authentic as possible. However, I would submit to you that when such investigative journalism talents go too far, it’s all too easy to give away trade secrets, proprietary information, or even information which could hurt our nation by giving secrets about our tactics, and technologies to our nations and in these.

This is more than just a little problem, and whereas there are folks in Hollywood who lean left in their political thinking, and perhaps are not too concerned with the military, they may not even like the military – therefore they don’t have a problem overstepping the bounds. Now then, I would like to discuss with you a real situation which has occurred, and perhaps this could be a movie in another itself, and there is a lesson in my dialogue here today, let me explain.

Now then, obviously Hollywood has been big political funders for the Obama Administration, at least in the past. Those campaign contributions, those political fundraising parties in Hollywood and on the east side of Los Angeles can buy favors from the administration. That’s all well and good however, when those political contributions are also buying important information that may be classified or secret then we run into a problem. I would submit to you that this particular case is a serious issue, and it does put our troops and military which are already in harm’s way in even more jeopardy.

Now then, is not against the law to decry human wars, or to lean left on the political spectrum. We live in a free country, with free speech, however I do not believe personally that entitles Hollywood screenplay writers, or movie producers to use information which they have collected which may be classified in their actual movies. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it, and if you have a difference of opinion, I’d love to set the record straight for you, so that you don’t fool yourself into believing that this might be okay.

Whilst the individual style and design of a tattoo remains the most important aspect of your newly acquired ink, the placement on the body follows closely in importance. How and where you display your tattoo will have a factor in how it is admired.

I first visited a tattoo parlour back in the mid eighties to get my first tattoo, there wasn’t a woman in sight. The two resident tattoo artists were both (very macho) males, the waiting room was full of an assortment of bikers, armed forces personnel and young men like me.

Women have and will continue to get tattooed in their masses and whilst it was once frowned upon by the general public, now it is accepted.

My wife is heavily tattooed. I remember the days in the summer when we would walk around the local supermarket and attracted stares of revulsion from young mothers and little old ladies! That doesn’t happen anymore, nowadays most women I see in the that supermarket have some sort of tattoo. Some are more heavily tattooed now than my wife!

I still maintain, as I did in my article regarding male tattoos, that tattoos look great in most places of the body, regardless of gender. There are however some keys places that are more beneficial to each gender.

It is also worth remembering that generally men and women get tattooed for different reasons. Women tend to go for personal tattoos with more meaning behind them, and thus sometimes feel more comfortable hiding them in discrete locations, whereas men tend to like to show their tattoos off.

So, if we’re talking about places for tattoos on women, which body locations are ideal?

1. Arms.

Usually a male preference, women are now expressing their tattoos on their arms. Whilst the muscle definition isn’t as pronounced as on the males arm, the advantage of arm placement is that excessive body hair shouldn’t be a problem!

I’ve seen some truly fantastic full sleeve designs on women. I think that is the key, long flowing tattoos tend to work better on the slender arms rather than individual designs placed on the biceps and forearms.

A point to make here is that there is nothing discreet about the arms. People will see it, and likely more often than on males due to the difference in clothing each gender wears.

2. Chest.

Breast tattoos have always been popular, particularly when the placement is at the top of the breast. This area lends itself well to smaller designs. Be advised that, again due to the clothing women tend to wear, this tattoo will be highly visible.

3. Head/Face.

You can now have beauty spots, eyeliner and other image enhancing ideas tattooed permanently. I have seen this from time to time on women. It is the only facial tattoo I have seen. A head tattoo is not likely to be an option as women tend to prefer hair on their heads.

4. Neck.

Another display issue for women but this can be an advantage. It is common to see women place tattoos on the back of the neck rather than the side. With the benefit of longer hair this tattoo can be hidden discreetly when chosen, or displayed in full glory when the hair is tied back.

5. Back.

A very popular location for women, the back offers the benefit of discretion should you choose not to show the tattoo off. The lower back is more preferable as low-cut dresses will still hid the design. Full back pieces will work depending on the design but it is not discreet and is definitely for the hardcore tattoo fan.

If you’re going for a bigger design a popular choice is to go for something that flows elegantly from one side of the back to another part of the body.

6. Legs

Tattooing the upper leg is a favourite female body location. If offers the benefits of discretion but can be showed of in the summer with swimwear. The lower leg is also popular, as are now the ankles and feet which can be showed off in the summer with the right footwear, or hidden when desired.

7. Hands

I’m seeing a lot of these nowadays, A popular choice of design is some form of script on the side of the hands. Lets face it, a lady’s hand is far more attractive than a guy’s hand in that it is likely to be hair free and often adorned with jewellery and polish.
